Exercise caution as COVID-19 UK variant is spreading fast

Qatar is now seeing an increase in positive COVID-19 cases with the new variant known as B.1.1.7 (UK strain), which is much more contagious.

There’s a significant number of new cases everyday, with many requiring admission to hospital to manage their symptoms, and even admission into ICU for life saving treatment.

The infections have increased in all age groups including the elderly. Which is an indication of virus transmission among family members, often caused by visits , events and social gatherings.

The good news is that the two COVID-19 vaccines available in Qatar, Pfizer and Moderna are both effective against the new variants.

Qatar’s roads are becoming safer

There’s been a significant decline in traffic accidents. And the number of road accident deaths, have declined drastically in 2020, dropping from 154 in 2019 down to 138 last year.

Of the 138 fatalities; 43 were pedestrians, 69 motorists and 26 were passengers.

The number of traffic violations in 2020 also came down by 20.1%.

In Today’s Weather

It will be hazy in some places at first becoming moderate temperature later with scattered clouds at times and a relatively cold by tonight.

Doha will see temperatures between 20 and 30 degrees. Elsewhere in Qatar it will be between 15 and 31 degrees.

And just a heads up for the weekend, tomorrow is expected to be strong winds with poor visibility due to dust. Temperatures are expected to be up to 35 degrees.

Now today’s COVID update.

In the last 24-hour period, there have been 473 new cases of COVID-19 and 307 recoveries. Which means there’s been an increase of 166 cases giving us a new current total of 11,178 active cases.
