It’s Monday 31st August, this is the news in 60 seconds

In today’s newspapers.

Qatar sets 1,000 Riyal minimum wage for workers and domestic help

In a major step forward in its Labour reform programme. Yesterday Qatar introduced a non-discriminatory minimum wage for workers. And removed the no objection certificate or NOC for employees to change jobs.

In addition to the 1,000 Riyal minimum wage. Employees should also receive 500 Riyals for accommodation and 300 Riyals for food expenses. If these aren’t already adequately provided by the employer.

The new minimum wage will come into force six months after the laws publication in the Official Gazette.

These truly are historic Labour reforms. And will completely change the Labour market within Qatar.

Tomorrow will see the reopening of Qatar’s Metro system.

And also the opening of Legtaifiya Metro station. Which completes the 40 kilometre long red line connecting travellers from Al Wakrah in the South to Lusail in the North. The new station will offer access to the Pearl Qatar, Laguna Mall and a host of high end hotels in area. Including the Ritz Carlton, Mondrian and Grand Hyatt.

Tomorrow also sees the introduction of a Wi-Fi service across the rail network.

Measures are in place to make students return to classrooms safe

A senior Ministry of Education and higher education official has said.

And five more people have been arrested for flouting the conditions of home quarantine.

Active cases of COVID-19 remain at just below 3,000. With 179 recoveries and 168 new cases.

Of those being tested, as a 7 day average we are now down to less than 5 people in 100, testing positive.

That’s all for today, have a magic Monday, and I’ll see you tomorrow.
