It’s Thursday 22nd October, this is the news in 60 seconds

In today’s newspapers

  • Education Ministry makes attendance compulsory on a rotation basis
  • The ban on summertime working hours in the open has extended.
  • Steps prevented 1 million more getting COVID-19 in Qatar

The Education Ministry has ended the option for parents to choose either blended or remote education. And has made attendance compulsory on a rotation basis for all students, from November the 1st.

This ruling applies to students in both government and private schools as well as kindergartens

The average attendance rate has been raised to 42% of capacity

However students with chronic diseases will be excluded from attendance in the first semester

The ban on summertime working hours in the open has extended.

Up until now work under the sun in open workplaces was prohibited from 11:30 AM until 3:00 PM,  from June 15th to August 31st.

The new law stipulates that there can be no work under the sun in open workplaces from 10:00 AM until 3:30 PM which is an extra 2 hours per day. And this will now be in force from the 1st of June Until September 15th annually. Which is approximately an extra 4 weeks.

The amendment improves the health and safety of workers in open spaces that are exposed to high temperatures, that can cause heat and health stress.

Doctor Al Khal says ‘our steps prevented 1 million more getting COVID-19’.

He goes on to say ‘without the restrictions and public health measures put in place when COVID-19 struck, the impact of the virus on Qatar would have been so serious that it would have overwhelmed the nation’s healthcare system’.

And as one of the few government’s that has actually got it right, I think Qatar deserves a round of applause.

Active cases of COVID-19 are up by 38 on yesterday’s figures at 2,892.

36 of those are travellers coming into the country and testing positive. And they are now in quarantine.

In total 6,505 COVID-19 tests were performed. And 4.09% of those tested positive.

Ministerial decision to abolish the system of reporting absconding workers soon

To safeguard the rights of workers in Qatar, a ministerial decision will be issued soon, to abolish the existing system of reporting absconding workers.

The Assistant Undersecretary for Labour Affairs at the Ministry of Administrative Development, Labour and Social Affairs, Mohamed Hassan Al Obaidli. Has said that an employer will no longer be entitled to report a worker as absconding. They will simply report that an employee has left their job in order to avoid future liability.

Flu shots more important than ever says Dr. Al Khal.

The annual seasonal flu vaccination campaign begins across the country from today.

The vaccine is available for free, at all Primary Healthcare Centres, at Hamad Medical Corporation for patients attending clinic appointments. And at more than 40 private clinics and hospitals as well as semi government healthcare facilities, until March 2021

The flu vaccination may not protect against COVID-19, but it will reduce the risk of developing the flu and flu related complications, and reduce the possibility of getting infected with both the flu and COVID-19 viruses at the same time.

The Katara international hunting and Falcons exhibition opens today.

A total of 112 companies from 13 countries, have flown in to take part in what is considered to be the biggest international event of its kind in the MENA region.

The exhibition is open from 9:00 AM till 2:00 PM then there’s a 2 hour break for disinfection, and open again from 4:00 PM until 11:00 PM. On Friday the exhibition’s operating hours will be from 2:00  to 11:00 PM.

To clarify reports yesterday, regarding entry fees for public parks. The Ministry of Municipality and Environment has said the entry fee is for the zoo in Al Khor Park only. There are more than 90 public parks where entry is still completely free.

The entry fee for the zoo in Al Khor park, has been set at 15 riyals for a full day for adults, and 10 riyals for children and those with special needs. And the fee for feeding the animals at the zoo is 50 riyals. Oooo… that’s a good idea. Anyone wishing to feed my cat can do so for just 10 riyals.

Active cases of COVID-19 are down by 4 on yesterday’s figures at 2,797.

25 of those are travellers coming into the country and testing positive. Who are now in quarantine.

In total 8,844 COVID-19 tests were performed, which is the highest number to date. And just 2.71% of those tested positive, which is the lowest number to date.

It’s Monday 19th October, this is the news in 60 seconds

In today’s newspapers

Private companies go on hiring spree

Private companies have started mass hiring signalling a revival in Qatar’s job market.

A senior official of a construction company has told the Peninsula, that the government has announced many new major projects which have created demand for construction companies.

And the ongoing hiring is not just for blue collar unskilled workers. Companies are also looking for white collar skilled workers as well.

Qatar is expected to be listed in the Top Ten countries in the Global Food Securities Index by next year.

Qatar ranked 29th in the index in 2017 when the blockade was imposed. With the help of the food security programme, Qatar jumped to 22nd position in 2018. And in 2019 made another major achievement by securing 13th position.

Qatar has achieved self-sufficiency in a number of fresh products. Including 106% self-sufficiency in fresh milk, and 127% self-sufficiency in fresh chicken.

Qatar has also achieved 75% self-sufficiency in fish production, and targets 95% by 2023 with the help of under construction fish farming projects on floating cages.

Barwa Real Estate Group is planning to develop integrated cities for the low and middle-class segments, as part of its efforts to enhance its position as a strategic real estate developer.

Active cases of COVID-19 are up by 15 on yesterday’s figures at 2,801.

23 of these are travellers coming into the country and testing positive. Who are now in quarantine.

In total 7,485 COVID-19 tests were performed, and just 2.73% of those tested positive, which is the same as yesterday’s all time low figure.

Qatar News in 60 Seconds

8,621 people were tested for COVID-19. Which according to my records is the highest number of tests performed in a 24 hour period since testing began. Of the 8,621 tested, just 2.73% tested positive. Which is a new all time low.

Active cases of COVID-19 are now 2,786 of which 40 were returning travelers, who are now in quarantine. And that’s the highest number of travellers testing positive according to my records as well.

To Summarise; the graph is on a downward trend with less than 3 people in 100 testing positive. This is an amazing achievement. Way to go Qatar.

If someone from your WhatsApp contacts, messages saying that they are having difficulty receiving a code, so they have sent it to you instead.

Or that a code was sent to you by mistake. Or indeed if anyone asks you to tell them a code sent to you at all. DON’T DO IT. This is a phishing scam. Armed with that code and your phone number, the bad guys can now take control of your WhatsApp account, prevent you from accessing it, and start trying the same scam on all your WhatsApp contacts.

This morning there are no local stories in the newspapers that I need to make you aware of.
