The golden thumb located in Souq Waqif is one of Qatar’s most photographed locations. Yes ladies…. It’s a thumb
Its real name is César’s Pouce, (but I’ve got to be very careful saying that). Which translates to César’s Thumb.
Installed in 2019 by Qatar Museums as street art, the location was chosen to emphasise its scale in relation to its surroundings.
The artist César Baldaccini was born in 1921 and created the original cast of his own thumb in 1965, for an exhibition in Paris, on the theme of hands, called ‘Le Main’.
The artist then made a series of increasingly larger versions of the thumb, scaling up the smaller model using traditional techniques.
Used as an easy to find meeting point, the thumb is located right in the middle of the Souq’s bustling restaurant area.
